INDABA 2015

download (5) After not having attended INDABA for the last 2 years, my friend Sandy and I decided to book aIMG_0043 (2)  Kulula last minute flight from Lanseria and go an see “what we were missing”

We arrived in a very humid Durban on Saturday afternoon and made our way to the guest house  we were staying at. (another story for another day! ), had an early dinner at a very cute restaurant on Umhlanga beach and then back to the guest house for an early night. ***

IMG_0045 (2)Up with the birds on Sunday morning and with the help of a very irritating GPS, eventually found our way to ICC. Now we had to get in!! Ticket to Indaba, if you are not an exhibitor or with the media are R604707abc8918b8fcb2219a877f08a3f62a each!! So there Sandy and I had to work out a  way to get in without having to spend  R1208 for  the day.  We eventually got in as media.  (It helps  to carry my NIKON camera  and bag sometimes,  although flippen cumbersome!!) Then came the  great trek….from one  impressive stand to another.  I have to add here that Sandy and I were both  having ‘power  surges’, while carrying +/- 30kg’s between us of brochures, booklets and  business cards.  NOT FUN , unless you were watching us! A-woman-carrying-several--006 (2)

I was saddened to see that the once ‘have to  have a stand’ INDABA has shrunk by half of IMG_0057 (2) what  it used to be.  I remember the days when  AA had  a huge colourful stand and ALL the AA  staff used  to make the trek down to Durban for a  full week!  What fun that was! No more of this I’m  afraid.  The once  prestigious AA Accommodation  Awards that used to take place in the Duban City Town Hall no longer  takes place.  Didnt see an AA stand and although I looked, I could not find a TGCSA stand either.

Nevertheless, we made sure that we saw  everything there was to see, visited the people we had appointments with, tasted the  snacks on offer (mostly endearmints which are highly addictive when you are hungry!)  and met people we had not seen in years.  Back in the day this would have taken 2 days to  do.  It took us 6 hours.

So the question arises…  Why has INDABA shrunk so much? What can be done to revive this once vibrant, exciting showcase of all things tourism and travel?  Most of the companies, guest houses, lodges, safari companies etc that I spoke to had a common answer.  “It has become too expensive!!”  Come on SA Tourism and sponsors, hear what the people are saying and lets sort this out! IMG_0048 (2)IMG_0056 (2)
